Copy Protection for HTML Documents
HTML is the standard markup language for creating web pages and web applications to be viewed via a browser. Usually HTML is used for internet sites, but some HTML applications such as interactive multimedia books, manuals, education materials, can work offline – people save them on the computer and use them without the internet. Of course it is possible to use PDF, but HTML is much richer – you can use video, audio, animated pictures, interactive components in JavaScript and many other things in one user interface.
SFContent.com offers copy protection for offline HTML documents: student’s books, guides, catalogues, interactive scenarios, etc.
What you get after protection?
- A copy protected EXE file, which can be distributed any way you like
- Serial numbers to grant access to your protected files or protected CD/DVD or USB Flash Drive (soon).
Protection against unauthorized access
Serial numbers can be compared with passwords. They are provided to end users to open a protected file. It is impossible to get access to the materials without entering a special number.
But you can ask a question: what if a user will give his serial number to another user or publish it on the internet? Will it work for other users? The answer is no, because SFContent.com uses binding to a material object.
Binding to a material object to prevent copying and pirate distribution
We use binding to material objects to control the number of copies. Every computer has a unique configuration: an operation system ID, a processer serial number and so on. When a serial number is activated, the protection system connects the inserted serial number and the user’s PC configuration and after that moment protected files can be viewed only on the computer with the saved configuration. So it means nothing if your user publishes a serial number on the internet – you set a number of activations (computers) per a serial number and rules for binding. Besides computers it is possible to use CD/DVD and USB Flash Drives (soon) for binding.
Remote access management over the Internet – DRM for HTML documents
If you select PC binding, you can use a broad set of options to manage access to your protected files, because our service has its own DRM system. A serial number is a tool to use it. Its parameters restrict lifetime and territory, number of runs, etc. You also can revoke access to your files if a user hasn’t paid in time or quits (corporate use). In your account you always can see statistics or make changes to the parameters of serial numbers. To learn more about this feature and how to use it, please watch this video:
Demo version creation for promo purposes
You can create a special version of your HTML document with a limited number of runs or a limited lifetime to promote your product.
I prepared a video for you to demonstrate how our protection looks like and how easy to use it:
Use case of HTML protection
Tech-Eco Evolution is an educational center. Its specialists developed several multimedia textbooks for supplementary education in different fields. The HTML documents included animated pictures prepared with Unity 3D. The main objective of the center was to prevent unauthorized distribution of unique learning materials.
At first the center planned to order copy protected CDs but soon they dropped this idea because most modern laptops do not have drivers for CDs and DVDs. As a result, PC binding with online activation was selected to copy protect HTML files. After protection files were uploaded on the site of the center and a student could get a link to download it only after payment of the course. Additionally an administrator sent a serial number with two activations to work only on two computers.
After new textbooks were introduced the center received a lot of positive feedback because students really enjoyed interactive content. Also students mentioned that it was very convenient to have a textbook simultaneously at home and at work. The center constantly monitored pirate sites and was satisfied with the quality of protection – they didn’t find any pirated copies.
As a next step the center prepared promo versions of the learning materials and published them on the site. This helped to increase number of clients. Colleagues also approved their efforts – the center was awarded for the best textbook for supplementary education.
